Saved Through Grace

Grace is a gift of God's unconditional love, given freely and generously, with no strings attached, and no expectation of repayment. He bestows his love and mercy upon saints and sinners alike. No person can earn grace by their own efforts. The apostle Paul states: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8).

The Biblical meaning of grace

Because he was Jewish, Paul originally formulated these words in Hebrew – the original language of the Holy Scriptures. The term for grace is chesed (חֶסֶד), often translated as loving-kindness or mercy. This word appears hundreds of times in the Hebrew Bible to describe God's compassion for sinners. For example, God promises to restore the nation of Israel from their exile in Babylonia, despite generations of sinfulness and disobedience (Jeremiah 33:11).

In his teachings and actions, Jesus of Nazareth was above all a messenger of grace. When he healed ten lepers and only one bothered to thank him, Jesus displayed no anger. This is because the core of his mission was to deliver grace. Through Jesus, “we have all received, grace upon grace" (John 1:16).
