The Holy Spirit: From Start to Finish
When you look closely, you begin to see that every page of the Bible – from start to finish – is imbued with the Holy Spirit. From the very first verses of Genesis, even before God begins creating the heavens and earth, we read that, “the Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters” (Gen. 1:2). And in the final verses of Revelation, the Bible closes with the Holy Spirit inviting all humanity to come to Jesus (Rev. 22:17).
The Blessed Breath
In the original Hebrew spoken by the people of Israel, the word for “Holy Spirit” is רוח הקודש ru’ach hakodesh, which means, “the blessed breath.” Jews and Christians do not believe that God is a big man in the sky blowing wind out of his nostrils. So, what exactly is the “blessed breath?” Because it is so abstract, this difficult concept is best understood by defining what it is not.
Understand the Hidden Secrets of Scripture
The direct opposite of the Holy Spirit is found in the story of David’s overthrow of King Saul: “Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and an “evil spirit” רוּחַ-רָעָה ru’ach ra’ah from the Lord tormented him” (1 Sam. 16:14). Saul grows increasingly violent until he eventually loses power. The Holy Spirit must then be the antithesis of the evil spirit. It is the peaceful, dignified, gentle aura that surrounds those who have been blessed by God.
