Divine assurance before the Exodus
Despite a miserable life in slavery, the children of Israel were initially reluctant to leave Egypt. So, God assures Moses that His intentions are good, “I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; I will give it to you for a possession.” (Exodus 6:8). Here, and throughout Scripture, God’s main proof of his covenant with Israel is his guarantee of the Promised Land.
It was more than just an inheritance
The word for “possession” in the original Hebrew is מורשה morasha. It comes from the root YRS/ירש meaning “to inherit.” But in Hebrew, this is a special word only applied to the Promised Land. Contrary to the more common word ירושה yerusha, which means an “inheritance,” morasha is a precious heritage. Morasha requires the active participation of each generation, to preserve it for the next generation, unlike yerusha, which is an inheritance that can be easily wasted.
