A Deep Understanding of Job
God says to Job, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me if you have understanding” (Job 38:4). In this, he is saying that we human beings have no right to question divine justice because we do not see the full picture. We cannot make complete sense of reward and punishment because we do not truly understand the ways of the universe. In the original Hebrew, the word for understanding is binah בינה. This is not just knowledge of facts learned from books, but true wisdom obtained through spiritual enlightenment.
Binah is not something that ordinary humans can expect to have. It’s reserved for extraordinary individuals, like Jesus. When writing about the future Messiah, the prophet Isaiah said that a shoot shall grow out of the stump of Jesse and from his roots, the Branch will bear fruit. The Branch of Jesse will have the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, binah (Isa. 11:1-2).
