What Is Teruah?

The teruah (תְּרוּעָה) was a powerful sound signal in ancient Israel that bridged military and spiritual realms. Originally a battle cry or trumpet blast used in warfare, it evolved to hold deep spiritual significance in Jewish worship.

Military Usage

In military contexts, the teruah was a distinct signal blast on the shofar (ram's horn) or silver trumpets to rally troops, announce attacks, or signal victory. We see this in accounts like Joshua's conquest of Jericho, where the teruah brought down the walls.

Spiritual Significance

But remarkably, this same term appears throughout scripture in worship contexts - particularly in Psalms and during festivals. The Day of Teruah (now known as Rosh Hashanah – the Hebrew New Year) centered on this sound. In the Temple, priests would blow the teruah on silver trumpets during celebrations and sacrifices.

Why It Matters

This means every time Israel sounded the teruah, their battle cry was also an act of worship, and their military signal accessed spiritual power. In addition, their shout connected earth's battles to heaven's victory and their warfare and worship became one act.
