Learn Biblical Hebrew in our live courses
God first answered “אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה” (eheye asher eheye). This phrase can be translated either as “I am (eheye) that who/what (asher) I am (eheye)” or “I will be who/what I will be”. After this mysterious answer, God added further details. Through Moses he told them: “YHWH (יְהוָה), the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you; this is My name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations”.
No one doubts that YHWH (יְהוָה) is the covenantal name of Israel’s God. However, the exact pronunciation is not known, since the Ancient Hebrew did not use vowels, only consonants (vowels were invented much later). There is also another reason why most Jews believe that people ought to revere, but not to pronounce this great name. The reason is simple: It is too holy and can be easily taken in vain.
