From ancient Egypt to the present day, the eagle has always been one of the most recognized symbols of strength. This symbolism can also be found in the Bible. God is compared to an eagle who will “mount up and swoop like an eagle and spread out his wings” against the enemies of Israel (Jer. 49:22). Likewise, the eagle represents speed (2 Sam. 1:23), eternal youth (Ps. 103:5), and supremacy (Job 39:27).
But the Biblical eagle is not merely an ideal warrior. It is a symbol of compassion as well. In Exodus ch. 19, God describes the departure of his people from Egypt with the words, “I bore you on eagles' wings” (al kanfei nesharim עַל-כַּנְפֵי נְשָׁרִים). This phrase refers to the intrepid way that an eagle teaches her chicks to fly. She pushes the fledglings out of the nest, but constantly hovers beneath them to catch them if they tire.
The great care shown by the eagle for its young is the perfect metaphor for God’s care for his people. The eagle does not overprotect her young. She encourages them to develop self-reliance at a young age. But she always stands by ready to help.
