The Pillar as a Guide
After the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, God led them into the desert with a pillar of cloud (עַמּוּד עָנָן, ammud anan) in the day that became illuminated with fire (עַמּוּד אֵשׁ ,ammud esh) at night (Exod. 13:21). In addition to providing the Israelites with direction in the wilderness, this pillar notified the people concerning when they should break camp and continue their journey, and when to stop (Num. 9:21).
The pillar as a Protector
The pillar of cloud served as more than just a guide for the Israelites. This amazing pillar protected the newly emancipated slaves from danger. It prevented Pharaoh’s army from reaching the Israelites as they crossed the Sea of Reeds (Exod. 14:19). Moreover, in Psalm 105’s rendition of the exodus, the cloud served as a covering, and protection (presumably) from the heat of the sun while they wandered the desert (v. 39).
