Learn Biblical Hebrew - Rediscover the Bible
Noah is one of the most beloved figures in the Bible. But the meaning of his life is so much deeper when read in Hebrew. According to Scripture, Noah was called “Noah” because “he will provide relief” to the cursed earth (Gen. 5:29). This explanation only makes sense when the verse is read in the original Hebrew. The name Noah sounds very similar to the word naham meaning “comfort” or “relief”.
Soon after, we read that “Noah found favor with the Lord” (Gen. 6:8). The phrase “found favor with” is used many times in the Bible as a way of indicating that someone is well liked. And Noah is the first person in the Bible to have been liked by God! In the original Hebrew of the Bible, the word for favor is chen (חן), which is Noah (נח) backwards – a play on words only discernible in Hebrew.
Chen is a vitally important biblical word, which not only means “favor” but “grace and mercy”. The point is Noah’s righteousness was so exceptional that it moved God to “take mercy” (chanan) on him and save him from the Great Flood. Do you yearn for glimpses of grace in Scripture?
