The Hebrew
Meaning of Pietà

The feeling of piety

The feeling of piety is the strongest feeling that connects people and allows people to identify with others. The origin of this word in the Hebrew Bible has a much deeper meaning than solely the act of helping and identification. In Hebrew the word for "piety" is רחמים , rahamim, and it is derived from the word rehem, רחם which means "womb" in Hebrew. The womb is the organ through which strong bonds are created between a mother and her child.

The Hebrew meaning

Surprisingly, one of the adjectives given to God is rahum, רחום, pious, from the same root. God, of course, has no womb. However, in the biblical language it appears written Adonai merahem, God has mercy, יהוה מרחם. Thus, God relates to the pain and hardship of people, and in many opportunities God protects them even when they have lost their way.
