The Truth of Scripture Through Hebrew
The answer is, of course, David, the most famous king in the Hebrew Bible. The name David brings to mind an image of a ruddy haired, handsome, indomitable, young leader. But do we really know who David was? Let’s focus on his name. In English, “David” is simply a name. But in Hebrew it has a meaning: beloved from the root דוד dwd meaning “to love”.
“Beloved” is indeed a very fitting name for David since love is really the essence of his character. He loved his many wives. He loved his many children. The people of Israel loved him. The Lord of Israel bestowed an everlasting covenant of love upon his family. Even though David sinned many times, he always returned to God. Consequently, God called David “a man after his own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14).
You might be deeply familiar with the stories of David chronicled in the biblical Books of Samuel.
