    The biblical roots of Jerusalem

The millennia-long Jewish attachment to Jerusalem of course goes back to the Bible. But not to the very beginning of the Bible. Initially, the Jewish people were separated into 12 distinct tribes. Their holiest city was Shiloh, the site of the Tabernacle where the presence of the Lord resided. Around the year 1000 BCE, a brash young king named David unified the 12 tribes into a single united kingdom of Israel. This would change the course of history forever.

A new capital: the city of David

David founded a new capital in the formerly Canaanite city of Urusalim. He conquered this hill and renamed it Yerushalayim (ירושלים/Jerusalem). In Hebrew, this name is connected to the word shalom (שלום) meaning “peace”. God then made an eternal promise to David: “I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they may live in their own place and be disturbed no more” (2 Sam. 7:10). This was the first declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people.
