The Sight of the Lord

Learn Biblical Hebrew online

  • The Lord will see

After the angel of the Lord stops Abraham from killing his son, Abraham looks up, sees a ram caught in a thicket and offers it up as a sacrifice, instead of Isaac. Then Abraham names that sacred place Adonai Yireh (יהוה יראה), which in Hebrew means “the Lord will see.” What a strange name! What exactly will the Lord see? And when will this happen?

    God Sees All Things

The true importance of this story is that this is the first instance of worship upon Mount Moriah, which means “divine sight.” This mountain will later become the site of both Jewish Temples in Jerusalem. The Bible tells us, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight” (Hebrews 4:13) and on this mountain, the sight of the Lord is felt very intensely.

    Hebrew reveals genuine Biblical insights

Centuries later, not far from this very spot, God looked down and saw Jesus as a sacrifice on the cross. Abraham chose the name “the Lord will see”, anticipating the divine sight of the crucifixion of Jesus. This deep connection between the Binding of Isaac and the Crucifixion of Jesus can only be appreciated in the original Hebrew language.
