Get back to the authentic roots of the Scripture
In the book of Genesis, we read that Isaac’s name comes from the root ZHK (צחק) meaning “to laugh or play”. He is given the name Yitzhak (יצחק) because his mother “laughed” (tizhak) when angels of the Lord promised that she would bear a son at the age of ninety (Gen. 18:12). And this is just a taste of the hidden Hebrew meanings behind Biblical names.
Centuries later, we encounter the famous love story of Samson and Delilah. This is a classic case of opposites attract. The name Delilah (דלילה) comes from the root D.L.L (דלל) meaning “weak”. It is fitting that Samson, the most powerful man in Israel, fell in love with such a delicate woman. Delilah’s name is also a pun on the Hebrew word for “night” (lilah), forming the perfect counterpart to Samson (Shimson שמשון), which comes from the word for “sun” (shemesh).
