Learn Hebrew - discover the secrets
We find a wonderful example of what it means to fear God in the opening chapter of the Book of Exodus. Hoping to annihilate the people of Israel, Pharaoh orders the Egyptian midwives to kill all male Jewish babies. But two midwives, Shifra and Puah, refused to comply. The Bible in translation states, “But the midwives feared God” (Exodus 1:17). In the original Hebrew the story is different.
Due to their deep faith in God, the midwives behaved courageously. Literally the entire future of the Jewish people was dependent on these Gentile women’s fear of God. In Biblical Hebrew, the word for fear of God - yirah יראה - is a special term separate from ordinary fright. It is a word that instructs us to be in awe. These brave midwives were in awe of God and therefore Pharaoh’s order paled in comparison.
Jesus used the same word yirah when he told his disciples, "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body…" (Matthew 10:28). This is not a command to merely respect, nor is it an order to be terrified, but to be in awe of God.
