The Hebrew name for Eve is Chava (חַוָּה), from the verb lichyot (לחיות) “to live”. There are many words which are connected including chai, (חַי) and chayim (חַיִּים), all of which communicate the idea of “life”. So, it makes perfect sense to call Adam’s woman Chava, because one day she will become the mother of “all the living” kol chai (כָּל־חָי).
Eve is also referred to by another name; isha (אִשָּׁה) (Gen. 2:23), meaning "woman" in Hebrew. This is generally considered to be the feminine form of the Hebrew word for "man", ish (אִיש), however the real root reveals something much deeper. The root comes from A.N.SH. (א.נ.ש), meaning fragileness and delicacy. Interestingly, the word "fire", esh (אֵשׁ) also resonates in the Biblical name for "woman". All these subtleties of language add depth of meaning to our understanding of Eve’s name, which can only come from reading the Bible in the Hebrew language.
