Study Hebrew and rediscover the Bible
Before he became famous as a healer and miracle-worker, Jesus was a preacher. The Gospel of Matthew begins its description of Jesus’ public ministry by telling us, “Jesus went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom” (4:23). Most of us have an image in our mind of what a modern-day preacher looks like. But what did it actually mean to preach in the days of the Bible?
The English word “preach” comes from the Latin words prae (before) and dicare (speak), “to declare in front of.” But Jesus spoke neither Latin nor English. The original Hebrew word that he used to refer to his preaching was drasha דרשה from the root DRŠ דרש meaning “to demand”. This is because Jesus’ sermons were not meant to be easy listening. As a Jewish preacher, Jesus looked deep into the words of Scripture, demanding a more profound meaning than what is apparent on the surface.
Jesus also made challenging ethical demands of his disciples. When he taught, Jesus was not merely giving a speech before a crowd of people. He was demanding that his disciples show love and mercy, rising above mediocrity to, “become perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).
