One cannot comprehend the identity of the modern State of Israel without understanding the Bible. Let’s start with Jerusalem, the ancient-modern capital founded by David. He conquered the Canaanite city of Urusalim, renaming it Yerushalayim (ירושלים/Jerusalem), from the word shalom (שלום) meaning “peace”. This is the fulfillment of God’s promise to David, “I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they may live in their own place and be disturbed no more” (2 Sam. 7:10).
The national emblem of the State of Israel has a menorah, the seven branched golden candelabrum found in the Jerusalem Temple, as described in Exodus 25. It was chosen as Israel’s seal because this same symbol was featured on the Arch of Titus, celebrating the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. After two thousand years of exile, the Jewish people returned to their land and mark their sovereignty by reclaiming this symbol from their oppressors.
One of the Bible’s strongest symbols alive in modern Israel today is its language: Hebrew. One hundred years ago, Hebrew was used by Jews only for prayer and religious study. Today, millions of Israelis use the ancient tongue of the Bible to conduct their everyday lives. This remarkable rebirth is nothing short of miraculous.
